Patty Devlin's Review of Consequences by Aleatha Romig

's review

it was amazing
bookshelves: way-outside-the-box
Read from April 16 to 20, 2016

I can't remember the last time a book has entranced me the way this one did. I haven't had a lot of time to read so it took me 4 days to read this. The point in saying this is that I HAD to put it down and come back to it many times, but while I was away from it, I couldn't set it aside in my head. And when I finally was able to finish it, I had to talk about it with some one else!

I like books with strong controlling and even sadistic or border-line abusive heroes. That being said, I hated Anthony Rawlings, I hated Claire Nichols, and I hated Catherine and Eric... But they wouldn't leave my head. I had to know more. I had to know what drove them. I had to know what they would do next. I had to know if Claire was ever going to stand up for herself and get out of there. Anthony, Tony, was so far beyond the loving but stern and unyielding dominant man I crave. He was abusive in all ways, physically, sexually, mentally and emotionally. This is not BDSM, or master/slave. It's not even close.

At first, I was surprised that the author didn't include the details of the abuse or sex but I later respected that. I feel if those details had been included we never could have come to even a moment of like for Tony, but somehow I did eventually come have some compassion for him and understanding of his character. I still don't feel he was ever actually redeemed and as the romance genre is rather known for a HEA there is not a happily ever after in this book. I believe the author said in a panel I attended that the book had a "Happily for Now" which would have sufficed, however, this is not a HFN in my opinion either. The end is a shock and for that, I say - well done. I didn't even question buying the second book for a second.

Whether of not I liked the characters, the book was gripping and well written. I will definitely read more by Aleatha Romig, (I've actually read book 2 now already and will post a review on that soon).
